Useful Beginner Portuguese Phrases

Note: This is meant to serve as my phrasebook. I will slowly add to this as time goes on and note what has been added.

Hi, I’m trying to learn Portuguese. Im using Duolingo and Anki flashcards at the moment. I’ve decided to try learning exact phrases that I might want to use when I meet someone that speaks the language.

Greetings

Oi -> Hi (friends)

Ola -> Hello (shops and public transport, friends and business acquaintances)

Como vai você? -> How are you doing?

Como você está? -> How are you?

Bem, obrigado. E você? -> Good, thanks. (And) you?

Tudo bem? -> You good? Everything well?

Oi, tudo bem? -> You can add Oi at the beginning

Don’t get stumped by their possible enthusiasm that you speak their language!

Você é brasileiro? -> Are you Brazilian?

Você é português? -> Are you Portuguese?

você -> you

Sim -> Yes Não -> No

Minha mãe é alemã, meu pai é irlandês. -> My mom is German, my dad is Irish.

Words in Portuguese have genders (masculine and feminine). Meu (meu carro -> my car) for masculine words, Minha (minha casa -> my house) for feminine words.

Estou aprendendo portugues -> I’m learning portuguese

Além do português, eu também sei outras linguas. -> Apart from Portugues, I can speak other languages as well.

Além do português, eu também falo ingles, frances e alemão. -> Apart from Portuguese I can also speak English, French and German

Eu posso falar outras linguas tambem. -> I speak other languages as well.

Eu sou meio alemão meio irlandês -> I’m half german, half irish.

Você fala português -> Do you speak Portuguese?

você -> you
fala -> speech/speak

um pouquinho -> a little bit

Names!

Starting simply with the verb ‘being’.

I am -> Eu sou

Side-note: Conjucation of the word ‘being’ to ‘be’ (se).

eu sou -> I am
tu és -> you are (informal singular)
ele é -> he / it is (masculine)
ela é -> she / it is (feminine)
você é -> you are (informal singular)
o senhor é -> you are (formal masculine singular)
a senhora é -> you are (formal feminine singular)

I am Saul -> Sou o Saul / a Katarina

We use ‘a’ for females and ‘o’ for males. Thats why when saying thank you we say obrigado to males and obrigada to females.

What’s your name? -> Qual é o seu nome?

What are you called?/What is your name? -> Como (você) se chama?

Fala inglês? -> Do you speak English?

Entende? -> Do you understand?

Entendo. -> I understand.

Não entendo -> I don’t understand.

Desculpe, não entendo -> I’m sorry, I don’t understand

Podia …, por favor? -> Could you please …?

Podia repetir isso, por favor? -> Could you please repeat that?

Podia falar mais devagar, por favor? -> Could you please speak more slowly?

Podia escrever isso, por favor? -> Could you please write it down?
